This past weekend, we took a moment to reflect on the profound legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man who dedicated his life to the fight for justice, equality, and liberation. Though Dr. King was not Muslim, his principles and actions resonate deeply with the teachings of Islam, which emphasize standing against oppression, advocating for fairness, and promoting peace.

Dr. King’s unwavering commitment to justice, even in the face of adversity, serves as a timeless example for all of us. His famous words, “Intelligence plus character—that's the goal of true education,” align so deeply with our school's mission and vision. At the Islamic School of Staten Island, we strive to nurture students who not only excel academically but also embody the moral and ethical values that define great character. We believe, as Dr. King articulated, that education is not just about imparting knowledge but also about shaping individuals who are compassionate, just, and principled leaders in society.

Dr. King’s legacy inspires us to align our actions with our faith by speaking out against injustice and striving to uplift those in need. His work has also inspired countless others, including figures such as Malcolm X, who dedicated their lives to the pursuit of equality and the empowerment of oppressed communities.

At our school, we are committed to teaching our students about the importance of justice and equity, rooted in both our faith and the examples of trailblazers like Dr. King. His legacy is a reminder that the fight for liberation and dignity is a shared human endeavor, one that transcends differences in race, religion, or nationality.

Let us honor Dr. King’s legacy by continuing to work toward a world where justice prevails, compassion is abundant, and peace is the ultimate goal. May we always strive to be champions of justice, following the principles that align with both our faith and our shared humanity. Enjoy your day off and let us educate our children about Dr King today!
